Low Back Pain
Low back pain is one of the most common reasons patients come through our doors in Thornhill. Sometimes it’s an acute injury from a lift, twist or fall. Sometimes it’s a slow build-up from sitting at a desk, repetitive work or a disc that has shifted out of position and started pressing on a nerve. The good news: most low back pain heals without surgery when treated correctly with manual therapy, targeted exercise, and the right adjuncts.

What Low Back Pain Feels Like
- Dull, aching pain in the lower back that worsens with prolonged sitting or standing
- Sharp, shooting pain that catches when you bend, twist or stand up from sitting
- Stiffness on waking that takes 15–30 minutes to ease
- Radiating pain, numbness or tingling down one leg (often sciatica)
- Weakness or “giving way” in the leg or foot
- Difficulty sitting through a meal, a movie or a drive
- Muscle spasm or “locking” that limits how far you can bend forward
Common Causes of Low Back Pain
Bulging or herniated disc
one of the cushions between vertebrae shifts and presses on a nerve
Muscle strain or ligament sprain
from heavy lifting, sudden twisting or repetitive bending
Degenerative disc disease
age-related wear that becomes painful when discs lose height
Facet joint syndrome
irritation of the small joints at the back of the spine
Spinal stenosis
narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerves
SI joint dysfunction
pain at the joint where the spine meets the pelvis
Postural strain
from prolonged sitting, poor lifting mechanics or repetitive desk work
How We Treat Low Back Pain at RehabOne Plus
There is no single fix for low back pain, recovery comes from combining the right treatments for your specific case. Your practitioner will assess your back in detail and build a plan from these proven approaches:
Physiotherapy
Hands-on manual therapy and a custom exercise plan to relieve the nerve, mobilize stiff joints, and strengthen the supporting muscles
Chiropractic care
Spinal adjustments to restore proper joint mechanics where mobility is the main issue
Ultrasound therapy
Deep heating to accelerate soft-tissue healing where indicated
Lumbar bracing
Short-term support during the acute phase, fitted by your practitioner
Custom orthotics
When foot mechanics or leg-length discrepancy is driving the back pain
When to Come In
Book a consultation if your low back pain has lasted more than a few days, is getting worse or is interfering with sleep, work or daily activities. We offer same-week appointments and direct-bill most insurers. If you experience loss of bladder or bowel control along with back pain, seek emergency care immediately that can be a sign of cauda equina syndrome and requires urgent evaluation.
Risk Factors for Low Back Pain
Some patients are far more likely to develop persistent low back pain than others. Understanding the risk factors helps your practitioner build a treatment plan that addresses the cause, not just the flare-up.
Desk work or long-distance driving
particularly without breaks every 45-60 minutes
Heavy or repetitive lifting
especially with poor mechanics or a twisted spine
Previous back injuries
that healed but left the area weak or imbalanced
Weak core or gluteal muscles
that fail to support the lumbar spine during activity
Sedentary lifestyle
with little walking, swimming or strength work
Excess body weight
which increases compressive load on the lumbar discs
Smoking
which is linked to faster disc degeneration and slower healing
Pregnancy and postpartum
changes to pelvic and lumbar mechanics
Age
with disc dehydration and degenerative changes accelerating after 40
Recovery Timeline: What to Expect
Most patients ask the same question on day one: how long until I feel better? Honest answer: it depends on how long the pain has been there and how it started. Here is what we typically see at our Thornhill clinic.
Acute pain (under 4 weeks)
Most acute low back pain responds to 4 to 8 sessions of combined manual therapy and exercise. Significant relief is common within the first 2 sessions. You should be back to full daily activity within 3 to 6 weeks.
Subacute pain (4 to 12 weeks)
If your pain has been around for a month or two, expect 8 to 12 sessions over 6 to 10 weeks. The plan layers in progressive loading, motor control retraining, and ergonomic assessment alongside hands-on treatment.
Chronic pain (over 12 weeks)
Chronic low back pain often involves nervous system sensitization, not just tissue damage. Treatment is longer (12 to 20 sessions over 3 to 4 months) and combines manual therapy with graded exposure to feared movements, strength training, and patient education.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Most low back pain is muscular or mechanical and clears up with conservative treatment. But a small number of presentations need immediate medical attention. Go to the emergency department, do not wait for an appointment, if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control or numbness in the saddle area (possible cauda equina syndrome)
- Progressive weakness in one or both legs that worsens over hours
- Severe back pain after major trauma (fall from height, motor vehicle accident)
- Fever with back pain, especially with recent IV drug use, immunosuppression or recent surgery
- Unexplained weight loss alongside the back pain
If your pain is severe but not in this red-flag list, book a same-week appointment and we will assess it within days.
