Car Accident Injuries We Treat
Whiplash (WAD I–IV)
The most common MVA injury. Rapid deceleration forces the neck through hyperflexion-hyperextension, causing soft-tissue strain, joint dysfunction, and nerve irritation. Symptoms: neck pain, headache, limited range of motion, upper back pain, referred arm symptoms.
Cervicogenic Headaches & Post-Concussion
Headaches following an MVA may originate from the cervical spine or from concussion. Both require differentiated treatment. We screen for concussion and manage headache patterns with manual therapy and a graded return to activity.
Low Back & Lumbar Injury
The lumbar spine is frequently injured in rear-end and side-impact collisions. Facet joint injury, disc irritation, and paraspinal strain are common. Left untreated, MVA back injuries commonly become chronic. See our low back pain page.
Thoracic Spine Injury
Mid-back injuries common in side-impact and T-bone collisions. Thoracic facet dysfunction, rib joint irritation, and muscle strain can cause significant pain for months if not properly rehabilitated.
Shoulder Injuries
Seatbelt loading and bracing impact (hands on steering wheel) commonly injure the shoulder, rotator cuff strains, AC joint sprains, biceps tendon strains. Full shoulder assessment is part of every MVA intake.
Knee & Hip Injuries
Dashboard impact injures the knee: patellofemoral pain, ligament strains, IT band irritation. Hip impaction in side-impact collisions can cause labral irritation and adductor strains. See our knee pain page.
TMJ (Jaw) Pain
Often underdiagnosed. The same deceleration forces that injure the cervical spine can cause clicking, jaw deviation, and chewing pain. We treat TMJ dysfunction as part of MVA rehab.
Nerve Symptoms & Radiculopathy
Tingling, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs may indicate nerve root compression from disc herniation. Requires careful assessment and modified rehabilitation. MRI referral arranged as needed. See our sciatica page.

MVA Rehab, Common Questions
Does auto insurance in Ontario cover physiotherapy after a car accident?
Yes. Under Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), physiotherapy, chiropractic, are covered for anyone injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless of fault. Coverage begins immediately. Minor injury benefits include a standard 12-week program of care. How long can I receive treatment after a car accident?
Minor injury claims under SABS receive a standard 12-week program of care. Non-minor injuries, fractures, nerve injuries, disc herniations, psychological impairment, qualify for significantly extended benefits. Your practitioner determines injury classification and documents your file accordingly.Do I need to pay upfront for MVA treatment?
No. We bill your auto insurer directly at every session. You pay nothing out of pocket for covered treatment. We handle all OCF documentation and insurer communication on your behalf. What is the $400 supplementary goods benefit under SABS?
SABS provides a minimum $400 entitlement for assistive goods related to your accident injuries, cervical pillows, TENS units, lumbar supports, braces, and other medical aids. Your practitioner documents medically necessary items and bills them through your accident benefits. How soon after a car accident should I start treatment?
As soon as possible. SABS timelines require your OCF-1 to be filed within 7 days. Earlier treatment produces significantly better outcomes for whiplash and soft-tissue injuries, research shows delayed treatment increases the risk of chronic pain. You do not need to wait for insurer approval to begin care. What is a minor injury under Ontario’s SABS?
Under Ontario’s Minor Injury Guideline (MIG), minor injuries include Grade I and II whiplash and sprains/strains without complicating factors. Minor injuries are treated under a capped 12-week program. Common Questions Patients Ask After an Accident
“My pain is not severe. Do I really need treatment?”
Yes, and earlier is better. Whiplash and soft tissue injuries often feel mild in the first 24 to 48 hours, then worsen significantly by day 3 to 5 as inflammation builds. Patients who delay treatment have significantly higher rates of chronic pain. Conservative treatment is fully covered and the early phase is when it works best.
“Will starting treatment affect my settlement?”
No. SABS accident benefits are completely separate from any tort claim against the at-fault driver. Documented treatment actually supports a future tort claim because it establishes the impact of your injury. Do not delay care because of legal concerns.
“What if I was at fault?”
Accident benefits under SABS are no-fault. You are entitled to treatment coverage regardless of who caused the collision. The only impact of fault is on the property damage / vehicle repair side of the claim.
“How long can I receive treatment?”
Minor injuries are covered under a 12-week Standard Program of Care. Non-minor injuries (fractures, nerve damage, disc herniation, psychological impairment or pre-existing conditions complicating recovery) qualify for significantly extended benefits.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Research on whiplash and soft tissue injuries consistently shows that patients who start treatment within 1 to 2 weeks of injury recover faster, have less chronic pain, and return to work sooner than patients who wait. The first 4 weeks are a critical window. Tissue heals best when it is loaded progressively and protected from re-injury, and the nervous system is less likely to develop chronic pain patterns when pain is managed early.
If you have been in an accident, do not wait. We see new MVA patients within 5 business days, often sooner. Call (647) 612-9000 or request an appointment today.
